Most tourists in Hamburg follow the tunnel under the Elbe and come to a viewpoint on the other side of the river (
53.542333, 9.967278). However, there is another viewpoint nearby that is much closer to the Philharmonie and therefore offers more scenic views. This is the viewpoint near the theater.

You can get here by car (

53.544611, 9.972139) on ferry 73 (
https://hadag.de/de/linien/73/) and get off at the next stop Theater im Hafen. Ferry fares are included in the standard city transport tickets.

You can come either in the morning, for sunrise, or in the evening, for sunset. In the evening there will be quite a lot of people here, almost all of them going to theater performance.
