Ruins of the former residence of the Counts of Hesse in Gudensberg

The ruins are clearly visible from the A49 autobahn, we had seen them many times and decided to stop by. We parked in the center of the old town and walked to the top. The old town is there, but it's not particularly interesting, both the Market Square and the Old Market Square are used as parking lots.


Near the old Prison Tower, a fairly steep climb begins.




At the top we found the remains of a medieval castle, which was founded in the XI-XII centuries and from the XIII century served as one of the residences of the Landgraves of Hesse. It played an important role in regional politics and defense.








Today, only picturesque ruins of the castle remained, including fragments of the walls, towers and the base of the main fortress. The ruins are located on an elevated position, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. It is a popular destination for tourists and locals interested in the history of the region. There is a memorial sign and information boards near the ruins, telling the history of the castle and its importance for Hesse.
