Darmstadt doesn't have an old town; it was completely destroyed during World War II and apparently hasn't been rebuilt. We parked in the underground parking lot near the city archives.
The center looks something like this. It's a pretty famous technical university.
Here is also the Darmstadt Palace, which was the residence of the Dukes of Hesse-Darmstadt, later the Dukes of Hesse. We didn't go inside as there was some event.
View of the palace from the Market Square.
Good design of the local cinema.
House with vegetation
A historic tower, right in the middle of the shopping malls. It was originally part of the medieval city fortifications. Inside there is a gallery and guided tours.
Another art gallery.
What we liked in the center was the Herrngarten park. At sunset it is very nice to take a walk. The park appeared in the 16th century and was private at the time. In 1811 Grand Duke Ludwig I opened the Herrngarten to the public, and it has been a popular place ever since.

Getting there: There are several train stations in Darmstadt.
