Castelnaud castle (Chateau de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle)

Well-preserved medieval castle on a high cliff above the Dordogne River. It took an active part in the battles and played an important role in the Hundred Years War, when it was captured by the British. The border between the French and the British was on the river. On the other hand, on the similar rock, stands Beynaс Castle, the eternal rival of Castelnau Castle. During the Hundred Years War, the French were in Beynac.




Since 1967 the castle underwent a long restoration, which ended only in 2012. Within the walls of the castle is a museum of medieval wars. So now you have a great chance to visit the real medieval castle.

Getting there: parking near the castle N 44 48.942 E 1 08.707. Nearest railway station is Gare de Sarlat, 10 kilometers away. As of 2019 there are no buses.
