Port Egas (Puerto Egas) is one of the best places on the island to observe the different animals. The place is named after Hector Egas, an entrepreneur who mined salt here. There is a salt lake near this place where salt was mined since 1928. A small settlement was built at the site and this greatly upset the local ecosystem. Fortunately, the price of salt has fallen and mine was closed.
Who lives here:
- sea lions, saw many
- seals, saw many
- sea turtles, saw few
- marine iguanas, saw many
- lava herons, saw few
- sally lightfoot crabs, saw many
The landing place is very picturesque.
As on many other islands there is a stone here, which tells that this place is uninhabited and is a national park.
There are two paths, one to the salt mines, the other along the coast. We went to the coast.
Funny cacti
This plant must not be touched in any case. Burn can stay for a few years.
The main part of the trail runs along the coast.
There are many different caves and stone bridges. In the bays, you can see sea turtles.
Fur seals and sea lions are everywhere.
Here's an interesting picture. Little lion found that some mom breastfeeding her baby and climbed over the wall. The fact that it can climb on a wall is amazing.
Mother saw the newcomer and started to scan him :)
Bus as sea lions and seals have one child the newcomer was not accepted :)
Finally we realized what means stripes on the sand, marine iguans left them with their tails.
There are a lot of iguanas here. Fernandina island features iguana city and here probably is iguana village. In the evening they just relax under the sun.
Iguanas are not afraid of people at all. You can even dance around them.
There are also different birds and crabs.
Getting there: only in a cruise
