Khortytsia is the largest island on the Dnipro river. The island has the status of the State Historical and Cultural Reserve. In the 16-18 centuries the legendary Zaporizhian Sich was located here. The symbols of Ukraine, cossacks, used to live here. In 2007 the island won the title of one of the "Seven Wonders of Ukraine."
We walked from the Zaporizhzhya downtown to Khortytsia. The island is very large, so prepare for a long walk.
The island has a rich fauna: more than 30 species of animals, 120 species of birds, 10 species of reptiles, 5 species of amphibians. I only saw lizards, mice, and a couple of interesting birds, one of which, unfortunately, had a broken wing :(
Khortytsia beaches surrounded by cliffs are a favorite recreation site of the Zaporizhzhya citizens. There is also a bridge for bungee jumping here.
Getting there: By night train from Kyiv. Also in Kyiv you can book seats in comfortable buses of the Autolux carrier. The buses leave from the central bus station (Demiyivska metro station).
